A new AI-based processing unit 
AI processing based on deep learning uses detailed information about human shapes and poses to dramatically improve the camera's subject recognition accuracy and take full advantage of its potential resolution. AI subject recognition has been extended to several new types of subjects, including vehicles and insects.

A new level of resolution
This next-generation α7R continues the quest for high image resolution, offering the highest resolution at low sensitivity in the series to date. The 61.0 megapixel back-illuminated 35mm full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor16 and the latest BIONZ XR™ image processing processor are fully exploited to deliver extraordinary resolution and subtle subject detail.

Advanced 5-axis optical image stabilization 
The entire image stabilization system has been updated with a high-precision image stabilization unit, advanced gyro sensors and optimized image stabilization algorithms. Camera movement is accurately detected and corrected by the image stabilization unit, providing reliable stabilization in a wider range of shooting situations. RAW image size and quality selection 
Lossless RAW image compression allows more high-quality images to be captured in bursts, with a choice of three resolutions with lossless compression. The M and S sizes have the same number of pixels (26/15 megapixels), whether shot in full-frame or APS-C mode. This makes it easy to switch between full-frame and APS-C angles in the same scene while maintaining the same image resolution. 

Pixel Shift Multi-Shot adapts to changing conditions 
Pixel Shift Multi-Shot takes advantage of the precise control of the built-in image stabilization system, capturing up to 16 pixel-shifted shots that can be composited later on the computer for a final image with exceptional resolution.18 In the latest version of Imaging Edge Desktop™ software, even the smallest, pixel-level movements are automatically detected and corrected19.

Precise and versatile external flash control 
When a compatible Sony external flash20 is used with the camera's auto white balance function, the white balance is adjusted to produce natural-looking tones on faces based on the balance between flash power and ambient light. Flash control also works with face detection to deliver the ideal flash intensity for the subject. 

Real-time Recognition AF for humans
With its innovative AI-based processing unit, the α7R V uses Real-time Recognition AF to accurately identify people's movements, providing 60%21 better human eye recognition than the α7R IV. Human pose estimation technology uses acquired human shapes and poses to recognize not only eyes, but also body and head position with high accuracy. This makes it possible to lock on and track a subject with his or her back to the camera or wearing a mask. 

Faster and more accurate autofocus system 
The immense processing power of the new BIONZ XR engine, combined with optimized algorithms, significantly improves autofocus performance. This performance is based on the enormous amount of data generated by the image sensor and the high-density, long-range autofocus system. Up to 693 phase detection points cover approximately 79% of the image area. The wider AF area also allows for greater framing freedom, for example when shooting vertical portraits. AF is highly accurate even at light levels as low as -4.0 EV in AF-S mode (equivalent to ISO 100, F2.0 lens). 

Real-time Recognition AF for a wider range of subjects
In addition to humans, animals and birds, the camera now recognizes insects, cars, trains and airplanes, for increased flexibility and reliability when capturing photos and videos. Animal recognition has been expanded to include more types of birds and small animals, in addition to dogs, cats and similar species, with up to 40% better accuracy.  

Permanent DMF
When shooting still images with AF-C or AF-S autofocus, you can rotate the lens focus ring to instantly switch to manual mode. This allows you to easily refocus on the original subject if the auto focus switches to another subject, for example, by simply rotating the focus ring. 

Focus Bracketing22
The α7R V automatically shoots up to 299 images with sequentially shifted focus points, using intervals and sequences that you define. You can then select the best image in the sequence, or a computer application can combine the bracketed images to create synthesized depth-of-field composites that take advantage of the camera's high resolution.

Burst shooting 
Even with the high resolution of the α7R V, it is possible to shoot in bursts of up to 10 fps with full AF/AE tracking using the mechanical shutter. This level of tracking speed and reliability makes it easy to capture the most photogenic moments and expressions with moving subjects. Up to 583 compressed RAW images can be captured continuously at 10fps. 

Superb 4K video recording
Full-frame and Super 35mm formats can be selected for 4K video recording, as can 4K 60p (50p)25 recording. Full-pixel playback in Super 35mm lossless mode allows 2.6x oversampling for 4K video. XAVC S-I (All-Intra) or XAVC HS is supported, as is 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling.

16-bit RAW output for greater editing flexibility26 
In response to the growing demand for RAW recording capabilities, the α7R V offers 16-bit RAW output to an external recorder27 via an HDMI cable. Full-frame 3848 x 2168 (16:9 aspect ratio) output is available with multiple frame rates28. It is also possible to export in RAW via HDMI while recording in 4K XAVC HS, XAVC S or XAVC S-I to internal card media. Proxy recording is also available. 

Full pixel playback for incredible 8K movie resolution
The XAVC HS format allows you to record high-resolution 8K 24p (25p) 23 video in-camera with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression. This makes the most of Sony's lenses and fully exploits the potential resolution offered by the sensor and full pixel readout. Even the subtlest details of the subject are captured faithfully. The ability to crop 8K footage in post-production to 4K also provides invaluable editing flexibility24.

Real-time tracking for video 
With significant improvements in subject recognition, the camera can provide more reliable real-time tracking - keeping track of specified subjects with precise focus, such as focusing on the subject's eyes. Subject recognition is now available for both video and still images, for fast and stable focus when shooting. Even when subject recognition is disabled, touch operation can detect and track subjects based on color, pattern (brightness) and distance (depth). 

S-Log3 gamma curve with over 14 stops of latitude
The S-Log3 gamma curve accentuates the gradation characteristics of shadows down to mid-gray (18% gray), reaching up to 14+ stops of latitude. Three color gamut settings are available: S-Gamut, S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine. These advanced settings make it easy to match footage shot on the α7R V with footage shot with VENICE and VENICE 2 digital cinema cameras, or FX series cameras with S-Log3 gamma curve settings, for smooth and efficient editing.

Active Mode Image Stabilization for Handheld Video Shooting 
Active Mode29 provides powerful image stabilization for handheld movie making. In addition, compatible lenses with image stabilization synchronize with the camera body for highly effective control, even for handheld telephoto shooting.

Designed for easy movie making
Focus Map30 makes it easier to see the depth of field when shooting movies. In addition, a sharp, visible red frame appears on the screen when recording is in progress. Shooting marks can be added to video clips recorded in the camera to identify specific scenes.

Unique 4-axis LCD monitor for greater shooting flexibility 
Sony's new 4-axis multi-angle monitor combines the advantages of a conventional tilt monitor with the flexibility of a side-view, variable-angle monitor. It allows for greater shooting flexibility with its unlimited horizontal and vertical angle adjustment31. 

Touch operation during shooting or playback 
Touch Focus, Touch Tracking and Touch Shutter can be quickly turned on or off by touching an icon on the shooting screen. During playback, images can be selected with a touch of a finger. The selected image can be enlarged or reduced by inward or outward pinching gestures. Touch sensitivity can be adjusted to ensure optimum control response.

Fast Wi-Fi for connecting to a PC, FTP and for transfers to a smartphone 
 Built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) enables communication in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands14. The 802.11ac standard offers 2x2 MIMO support for fast, stable data transfer and reliable communication. 

Remote shooting from a PC via wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) 
The camera can be connected to a computer via Wi-Fi for wireless remote shooting using the "Remote" function in Sony's latest Imaging Edge Desktop application. This gives the user greater freedom of movement in the field or studio. The 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands14 can be selected as needed. In addition to the ability to connect the camera directly to the PC wirelessly, connection via a wireless access point provides the flexibility to work in a variety of network environments. 

Efficient heat dissipation for extended recording time 
Heat generated by the image sensor, image processor and AI processing unit is dissipated optimally to prevent overheating. This process is aided by the unique Σ (sigma) shaped graphite material, which is integrated into the image stabilization unit. This structure allows the image sensor, one of the main sources of heat within the camera body, to move freely during stabilization while contributing to five times the heat dissipation.

Durable magnesium alloy chassis, reliable mechanical shutter
The top cover, front cover, inner frame and rear cover are made of lightweight and extremely rigid magnesium alloy to ensure optimal performance even in harsh environments. The shutter with a fast response motor minimizes mechanical vibration of the shutter that can cause blurring, while supporting ultra-fast burst shooting at up to 10 frames per second. The shutter is quiet and has been durability tested to over 500,000 shutter cycles.

QXGA viewfinder with the highest resolution in its class 
The 9.44 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers the highest resolution, approximately 1.6 times higher than previous UXGA Tru-Finder™ viewfinders. It also features significantly optimized optical characteristics and mechanical design, achieving a world-record 0.90x viewfinder magnification and a 41° diagonal field of view (approximately 43° across the entire display area). 

Two CFexpress Type A memory card slots
The α7R V has two slots that support CFexpress Type A memory cards as well as SDXC/SDHC UHS-I and UHS-II cards, which offer high capacity and fast read/write speeds. The same data can be stored on both slots simultaneously for backup purposes, or the user can choose to separate photos/films or JPEG (HEIF)/RAW formats. A relay mode is also available, which automatically switches the recording of still images or videos to the second media card.

USB PD (Power Delivery) supporting fast charging
The α7R V supports USB PD (Power Delivery), which allows for higher power to be delivered from an external source. A USB charger or mobile battery that supports USB PD can be connected to the camera's USB Type-C® port to power or charge the internal battery at three to four times the speed of the previous model. 

Recycled materials 
Sony strives to use non-plastic packaging materials, with plant-based non-woven fabrics as well as recyclable materials. As for the camera itself, no non-recyclable resources are used in the manufacture of our SORPLAS™32 material, which is multiply recyclable, durable and high quality. Recyclable plastics are also used whenever possible32, reducing the negative impact on the environment without compromising performance or functionality.
