Exceptional Sony G image quality
Two AA (Advanced Aspherical) and three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements correct chromatic and spherical aberrations for extremely high optical performance, from ultra-wide angle 20mm to 70mm. The 9-blade circular aperture and optimized spherical aberration accentuate the depth and smoothness of bokeh, for beautiful and memorable images.

Exceptional autofocus in stills and video
Two XD Linear Motors deliver high efficiency for fast, quiet, and smooth focusing. Improved efficiency1 results in a 60% increase in AF speed2. Tracking performance is doubled2, for reliable and accurate tracking. Tracking moving subjects is reliable in bursts up to 30fps3, and capturing high frame rate video is smooth.

Optimized video images
Advanced technology reduces focus fluctuation as well as axis and focus shifts when zooming. Thanks to XD Linear Motors and a new aperture system that greatly reduce noise and vibration, this lens is ideal for video shooting. Jitter compensation available on compatible α4 series enclosures is supported.

High maneuverability and reliability in all environments
This lens features a dust and moisture resistant design and a fluorine coated front lens. Controls, including focus lock and independent focus, zoom and aperture rings, provide flexibility and versatility in stills or video. A switch makes it easy to switch between auto and manual focus.

Excellent close-up performance
AA (advanced aspherical) lens elements achieve a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters (wide-angle) to 0.25 meters (telephoto) in autofocus mode, and 0.25 meters throughout. focal range in manual focus mode. The maximum magnification of 0.39x provides detailed close-ups. Close focusing makes it easy to work around small subjects to find the perfect angle.

Constant F4 maximum aperture
Constant F4 maximum aperture provides more aperture choices at any focal length. The selected aperture remains constant throughout the zoom range. Extreme ISO settings are superfluous at the telephoto end of the range, and high shutter speeds can be used as needed to achieve the desired effect.

Active mode supports ultra-wide angle images
The active-mode image stabilization of the α-series cameras proves particularly effective at the 20mm ultra-wide-angle end of the focal range. It offers excellent image stabilization performance while ensuring a wide angle of view. This feature is very useful for shooting steady and smooth handheld video while walking.

Aperture ring with switch to activate or deactivate the detents
Independent aperture ring provides direct and intuitive aperture control. An ON/OFF switch allows the opening detents to be deactivated when fluid and jerk-free handling is required.

Focus hold buttons and focus mode switch
Customizable focus hold buttons are arranged in two different locations for easy access and control. The focus hold button can be assigned other functions from the body menus, depending on shooting needs. The focus mode switch allows on-the-fly switching from auto to manual focus, and back again, depending on the shooting conditions.
