The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is an ultra-telephoto lens exclusively intended for mirrorless cameras. It offers a focal length of 500mm and exceptional image quality, this lens is remarkably compact and lightweight. By incorporating several proprietary large-diameter low dispersion glass elements, which are complex to produce, SIGMA was able to significantly reduce the lens size without the use of a diffractive lens. In addition, the lens achieves a very high resolving power which meets the expectations of a fixed lens with a 500mm focal length. The lens is made mainly of high-precision engineering plastic parts, it features excellent build quality and weather resistance, including a dust and splash-proof structure*, and this with a compact size. With its optical power and incredibly compact size for its focal length, the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports offers a whole new photography experience for wildlife, aviation, sports and other fast-paced action photography.
*The structure is designed to be dust and splash resistant, but not water resistant. Be careful not to put the lens in contact with a large amount of water. Water inside the lens can cause significant damage and even render the lens beyond repair.
Perfect for handheld shooting, a 500mm lens with unrivaled optical performance
A latest generation optical construction using proprietary low dispersion glass elements has achieved both an extremely compact lens construction and high optical performance with excellent aberration correction. In addition to its size which allows handheld shooting, the high-speed autofocus with its HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor and its OS2 optical stabilization algorithm ensure comfortable shooting.
High optical performance and compact lens construction
The latest generation optical design has made it possible to considerably reduce the size of the optical system of this 500mm ultra-telephoto lens. By using proprietary low dispersion convex elements at the front of the lens, it offers both high aberration correction capability and a reduced overall length. The high technological level of production at the Aizu factory, SIGMA's only production site, makes it possible to obtain the precision necessary for the processing of exclusive low dispersion glass elements for a large aperture. The lens has excellent correction of all aberrations, especially axial chromatic aberration, which cannot be corrected by the device, ensuring consistent high resolution from the center to the periphery of the image.
Excellent resistance to backlighting of the subject
The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports uses refractive lenses in its optical construction to avoid flare and incident lights that are characteristics of diffractive optical elements, allowing clear images to be obtained without worrying about these effects, even when backlit or when a light source is included in the image. In fact, based on latest generation simulation technology, measurements are taken against all incident light conditions.
High-speed AF with an HLA linear motor
An HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor is used to motorize the AF, it is characterized by its high precision of movement thanks to advanced electronic control, as well as by its silence. The HLA motor provides fast and precise autofocus, even for ultra-telephoto shots, such as sports and bird shots, where extremely precise focusing is required.
OS2 algorithm used for optical stabilization function
The latest OS2 optical stabilization algorithm provides an extremely high 5 stops* image stabilization effect. The lens is equipped with two OS modes: Mode 1 is suitable for general shooting and Mode 2 is ideal for continuous shooting. In mode 2, SIGMA's Intelligent OS, an algorithm specially designed for continuous shooting, provides effective image stabilization even when the camera is moved vertically or diagonally, regardless of horizontal orientation and vertical. This allows you to capture the subject's movements without losing the yarn effect.

Compact, lightweight and excellent build quality
The lens has been designed to be small and lightweight, as has its optical construction which has been made significantly more compact. Not only is the lens easy to handle handheld, but it also offers the weather resistance of SIGMA's Sports line specifications and the excellent build quality that SIGMA prides itself on in terms of texture and operation quality of every ring and every order.
High-precision TSC* parts enable both high performance and a compact, lightweight design.
To achieve such a compact, lightweight and robust lens, materials such as TSC and magnesium were used in the appropriate places. In particular, the production of a large TSC part that fulfills the function of internal structure, as well as an external part to reduce the size and weight of the lens, are manufactured with micron precision and also have a sleek finish that gives the lens its premium look. The elaborate processing and production technology of the Aizu factory, SIGMA's only production factory in Japan, enables highly precise production and guarantees the high performance and durability of the lens.
*TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) is a type of polycarbonate with a thermal expansion rate similar to that of aluminum. It has a great affinity with metal parts, which contributes to the production of high-quality products.
Weather resistance, Sports line specifications
The mount, manual focus ring, switches, and camera connection are all dust and splash resistant to prevent dust and dirt from entering the lens. Additionally, the lens front element has a water and oil repellent coating for easy maintenance when water drops or dust adhere to the lens.
Sun visor included
A lightweight, highly durable and exclusive TSC sunshade is included. The end of the lens hood is rubberized to protect the lens from abrasion and scratches caused by facing down the lens.
A multitude of functions to help you in many shooting situations
The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is equipped with a full range of assistive functions, including an aperture ring and three AFL* buttons ready to be assigned to chosen functions in the camera. The L-mount version is also compatible with SIGMA teleconverters for autofocus shooting at ultra-telephoto focal lengths of up to 1,000mm.

Full range of customizable functions
Equipped with a focus seek limiter, the lens allows users to limit the focus operating range during autofocus when necessary, enabling fast and accurate focusing.
Additionally, the lens has three AFL* buttons ready to be assigned to selected functions using the camera. The AFL buttons are easy to use regardless of camera orientation and provide quick access to important settings. For the L-Mount version, the SIGMA USB DOCK UD-11 can be used to adjust the operation of the OS stabilizer or the range of the focus limiter by the custom mode dial*.
The setting assigned to Sony E mount lenses cannot be changed from the default setting because there is no USB DOCK for this mount. The default setting allows users to switch the visibility of the OS stabilization effect in the viewfinder and live view.
Equipped with diaphragm ring
In addition to an aperture ring, the lens is also equipped with an aperture ring switch and an aperture ring lock switch, which allows the aperture to be adapted for each use.
Removable collar base
The lightweight and robust magnesium alloy collar base is compatible with the Arca-Swiss standard. The removable base is fixed on a ring which clicks at 90° intervals.
*The TS-151 collar base is compatible with the SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports.
Teleconverter for L-Mount (1.4x / 2.0x)
The L-Mount version of the lens is compatible with the SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2.0x) teleconverters. By using a teleconverter, the focal length can be multiplied by 1.4 and even by 2, so you can shoot with autofocus at ultra-telephoto focal lengths up to 1000 mm.
