The autofocus is exceptionally fast and quiet thanks to the stepper motor, which can be especially useful when recording videos or shooting fast moving subjects such as children and animals. The lens's exceptionally small and light build, which weighs less than 300g, makes it perfect as an interchangeable first lens, as well as a secondary lens for Full Frame * 2 cameras, and for various shooting situations.

The SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary covers focal lengths from 27mm to 75mm in Full Frame equivalence, and has a wide aperture of F2.8 throughout the focal length range. This makes it easy to get blurry backgrounds, which is ideal for taking beautiful portraits and close-ups. The bokeh is soft and attractive, it does not distract from the subject in focus.

 

The lens's three high-precision aspheric molded glass elements, combined with reduced total element count, achieve superb optical quality without excessive weight; the use of in-device aberration correction further eliminates optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting. This has all been made possible by the latest optical design technologies from SIGMA's only production unit in Aizu, where all SIGMA lenses are manufactured.

 

The SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is remarkably compact, matching the portability of APS-C hybrid devices. This makes it a perfect work lens, ideal for everyday use. This lens is currently the smallest and lightest in its class * 1, with a maximum diameter of φ65.4mm, length of 74.5mm and weight of 290g * 2, while maintaining a constant aperture of F2.8.

 

To keep the lens as light as possible, SIGMA constructed the lens body from carefully selected materials. A polycarbonate called Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) was used for the construction of the barrel, thin, robust, and especially with a thermal conductivity close to that of aluminum. This ensures stable performance and smooth operation when the temperature changes. By deliberately using metal for part of the internal structure, the parts were able to be made much thinner and more rigid, allowing the lens to withstand frequent and heavy use.

The SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary has fast, near-silent AF that makes it ideal for a variety of photographic applications, including shooting in quiet environments, recording movies, and capturing fast moving subjects. This result was obtained using a stepping motor as the AF device. Since it is small and light, it can be flexibly used in situations such as handheld shooting, which requires high mobility, shooting using a gimbal, shooting single person video and vlogging.

 

Keen to make the lens as versatile as possible in a wide variety of shooting conditions, SIGMA designed the lens with a minimum focus distance of 12.1cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1: 2.8 *, which also makes it ideal for close-ups.
