Canon EOS R8 Mark II: Compact, Fast and Versatile Full-Frame Hybrid Camera

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II combines the image quality of a full-frame sensor with a compact, lightweight body designed for photography, filmmaking and content creation on the move.

Building on the original EOS R8, the Mark II introduces several significant improvements, including in-body image stabilization, faster continuous shooting, a pre-capture function, enhanced intelligent autofocus and revised ergonomics featuring a new Multi-Controller joystick.

With its 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, 5-axis IBIS providing up to 7.5 stops of stabilization, and 6K-oversampled 4K 60p 10-bit video, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is a capable all-round solution for travel photographers, portrait and event shooters, vloggers, filmmakers and hybrid content creators.

24.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor

At the heart of the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is a 24.2MP 36 x 24mm full-frame CMOS sensor.

It delivers the image quality, depth-of-field control and low-light versatility associated with the full-frame format while maintaining a resolution suited to a wide variety of photographic and video applications.

Native sensitivity extends from ISO 100 to 25,600, with an expanded range reaching ISO 102,400.

The camera uses the Canon RF lens mount and supports RAW, C-RAW, JPEG and HEIF still-image formats.

Up to 40 fps Electronic Continuous Shooting

The EOS R8 Mark II is particularly well suited to fast-moving subjects thanks to electronic continuous shooting at up to 40 frames per second at full resolution.

Buffer performance has also been improved compared with the original R8.

At 40 fps, the camera can capture up to:

  • 73 RAW images
  • 190 JPEG images

This makes it highly effective for sports, wildlife, events and other situations where the decisive moment may last only a fraction of a second.

Pre-Capture up to 20 Frames

A new pre-capture mode helps photographers capture unpredictable moments.

When the shutter button is half-pressed, the camera begins temporarily storing images in its buffer. Once the shutter is fully pressed, the R8 Mark II can save up to 20 frames recorded during the preceding half-second.

This feature is particularly useful for wildlife, sports, children and other subjects whose movements can be difficult to anticipate.

Intelligent Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Canon's advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system offers virtually complete frame coverage, enabling the camera to track subjects from one edge of the image to the other while maintaining accurate focus.

Intelligent subject detection can recognize:

  • People
  • Animals
  • Vehicles
  • Faces
  • Eyes
  • Driver and rider helmets

Subject detection is available for both still photography and video.

With autofocus sensitivity extending down to -7.5 EV, the EOS R8 Mark II can also focus accurately in very dark environments such as concerts, clubs, nighttime streets and other challenging low-light situations.

Register People Priority

The Register People Priority autofocus function allows selected faces to be registered in the camera and given priority by the autofocus system.

This can be particularly useful for weddings, conferences, lifestyle photography, events and group portraits.

The photographer can, for example, instruct the camera to prioritize the bride, lead model or keynote speaker rather than another person appearing in the scene.

Up to 7.5 Stops of 5-Axis IBIS

Unlike the original EOS R8, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II incorporates 5-axis sensor-shift in-body image stabilization.

For still photography, the system provides up to 7.5 stops of correction at the center of the image and 7 stops towards the edges.

The stabilization system makes handheld shooting easier at slower shutter speeds and also contributes to smoother handheld video footage.

It can work together with compatible stabilized Canon RF lenses for additional coordinated correction.

6K-Oversampled UHD 4K 60p 10-Bit Video

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II is also designed as a powerful compact filmmaking tool.

It can record UHD 4K video at up to 60p in 10-bit, using 6K oversampling to produce highly detailed 4K footage.

Internal recording includes XF-HEVC S 4:2:2 10-bit, making the camera suitable for travel productions, interviews, vlogs, social content, documentaries and more advanced filmmaking workflows.

Canon Log 3 and up to 14 Stops of Dynamic Range

For users who want greater flexibility during colour grading, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II offers Canon Log 3, with up to 14 stops of claimed dynamic range when used in Custom Picture mode.

Additional video options include:

  • HDR-PQ
  • Canon 709
  • BT.709 Standard

These choices allow users to select either a grading-oriented workflow or a faster approach designed for footage that can be used with minimal post-production.

Full HD up to 180p

The EOS R8 Mark II can record Full HD video at up to 180 frames per second, making it possible to create detailed slow-motion sequences.

Fast-motion and time-based creative functions are also available directly in-camera, reducing the need for complex post-production.

A red tally lamp on the front of the camera provides a clear visual indication that video recording is in progress.

Built-In Creative Modes

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II provides several creative functions designed to produce finished-looking images directly in-camera.

14 Special Scene Modes

The SCN mode provides 14 automated presets optimized for specific situations, ranging from studio portraits to handheld nighttime cityscapes.

Positive and Negative Filmtone

Positive Filmtone and Negative Filmtone modes digitally recreate some of the texture and tonal characteristics associated with classic positive slide and negative film.

They provide an easy way to create a more analog-inspired aesthetic directly in-camera.

Advanced A+

The Advanced A+ mode analyzes the scene and uses intelligent bracketing and image processing to create an optimized final image automatically.

Compact Travel-Friendly Body

The EOS R8 Mark II features a redesigned body with flatter exterior surfaces, making it easier to pack while maintaining comfortable ergonomics.

The camera weighs approximately 499 g body only, making it especially portable for a full-frame camera equipped with mechanical in-body stabilization.

With battery and memory card installed, the weight is approximately 546 g.

Multi-Controller Joystick

A newly incorporated Multi-Controller joystick provides faster and more intuitive control.

Positioned for easy operation with the thumb, it can be used to move the autofocus point and navigate camera functions without having to rely exclusively on the touchscreen or directional controls.

2.36M-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder

The EOS R8 Mark II features a bright 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with 100% frame coverage.

A refresh rate of up to 120 fps provides smooth viewing when following fast-moving subjects.

Viewfinder magnification is approximately 0.7x.

3.0-Inch Vari-Angle Touchscreen

A large 3.0-inch 1.62-million-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD provides flexible composition from a wide range of shooting angles.

The fully articulating design is particularly useful for:

  • Vlogging
  • Low-angle shooting
  • High-angle shooting
  • Self-recording
  • Video content creation

Touch & Drag functionality also makes it possible to move the autofocus point quickly and intuitively from the touchscreen.

Comprehensive Wired Connectivity

The EOS R8 Mark II includes a comprehensive range of connections for hybrid photo and video production:

  • USB-C for charging, power and data transfer
  • Micro-HDMI video output
  • 3.5mm stereo microphone input
  • 3.5mm stereo headphone output
  • E3-type wired remote terminal
  • Canon Multi-Function Shoe

Having both microphone and headphone connections is particularly useful for monitoring audio accurately during professional video recording.

Canon Multi-Function Shoe

The Canon Multi-Function Shoe expands on the capabilities of a conventional hot shoe.

Additional electronic contacts provide communication with compatible accessories and can supply power to selected devices that would otherwise require their own batteries.

Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II features integrated Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.

Using the free Canon Camera Connect app for iOS and Android, users can access stored files, adjust camera settings, control the camera remotely, display a Live View feed and transfer images.

A connected smartphone can also continuously send GPS information to the camera, allowing location metadata to be added to captured images.

USB Connection and UVC/UAC Webcam Support

The camera can also be physically connected to a smartphone or computer via USB-C.

Compatible Canon Camera Connect functions can therefore be accessed through a wired connection.

Thanks to UVC/UAC support, the EOS R8 Mark II can also operate as a webcam with a compatible computer without requiring additional software.

Canon Live Switcher Mobile

The camera's Wi-Fi connectivity also allows the EOS R8 Mark II to operate as a video source in compatible multi-camera productions using Canon Live Switcher Mobile.

This makes it suitable for live streaming, presentations and multicamera content production.

UHS-II SD Memory Card Slot

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II uses a single SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot with UHS-II support.

Fast UHS-II cards are recommended when using high-speed continuous shooting or high-bitrate video modes.
